1990's
The 1989 Laing exhibition was a
pivotal point into abstract art and Robert Clark of the Guardian was
commissioned to write a review of
Duffy's work to date. By 1990 he had developed a unique painting surface that transformed his way of
painting and brought him immediate recognition and success through a number of
London galleries and the Contemporary Art Society. Following this he exhibited in the Hunting/Observer
Prize in London and Paris, and the John Moores Liverpool. A work is used for
the cover of a Chopin CD. The
"Black Square"
performance development project began. In 92 he was awarded a British Council
fine art fellowship in Budapest and
in the same year he left Education and then Arena Studios "to fully
concentrate on painting". In 1993 he begins to write a series of poems or
Text Works and one is published. He exhibited at the
Merkmal Gallery in Liverpool and
has the Guardian "exhibition of the week". In 95 he began the "Poppy field" project and makes reference to RS
Thomas poetry. In 97 he exhibited at the New Millennium Gallery in
St Ives Cornwall and in the same year
is commissioned to restore the John
Lennon/Stuart Sutcliffe murals. In 98 he undertakes a major Lottery funded
glass commission and produced what
is possibly the largest glass commission in the UK. 1998 saw the beginnings of the "Inversion project" with Tim Collier,
and also the "RS Thomas Triptych"
