The Mosque,
Istanbul.
Duffy
wants MONUMENTS to be located in a
Mosque, the great iconic symbol of
Istanbul. Furthermore, it would have
to be in one of only a small number
of Mosques which were originally
Christian churches and where the
iconography encompasses both
religions. This intervention and
dialectic celebrates its location,
encouraging the viewer to enjoy the
narrative, the spectacle and majesty
of the awe inspiring Mosque.
However, in stark contrast, the
dark, minimal, unadorned, even
brutal exterior of MONUMENTS creates
a post modern dichotomy.
In December 2008 Duffy submitted a
proposal for the work to be
installed in a mosque during the
2009 Istanbul Biennale: Link, under
the working title “Without conflict
there is no religion........ (link
to proposal)
The
overall vision was that, “MONUMENTS
neutralises the powerful impact of
the outer building creating a
dialectic that looks beyond the
buildings decoration, the massive
scale and magnificence of the
architectural and religious
splendour to an individualized
narrative of religion and cultural
identity, heterogeneity and
consideration of ongoing conflict in
the world today.”
This proposal didn't materialise,
nevertheless the ambition to achieve
this outcome is still in progress. |
